Mission Statement

The Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities (OSRR) administers the California State University Standards for Student Conduct. This office ensures a fair and impartial administration of the disciplinary process while educating students about their responsibilities and protecting the rights of all members of the University community. The Office addresses student behavioral problems in a developmental and educational manner with the goal of fostering the ethical development and personal integrity of students.

Values

The goal of the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) is to manage a student conduct process that educates students about how their actions impact their person, the campus, and the greater campus community.

The OSRR’s places a high priority on students' learning, and we have created learning objectives as outcomes for students that go through the disciplinary process. The OSRR supports the Cal Poly University Learning Objectives of thinking critically and creatively, communicating effectively, and making reasoned decisions based on an understanding of ethics and respect for diversity. The following learning outcomes guide the work of OSRR. Student’s will develop a greater understanding of how:

  • The behavior required by the Standards for Student Conduct supports the student's ultimate success.
  • The Standards for Student Conduct contribute to the well-being of the university community.

Following participation in the conduct process, students will also be able to:

  • Articulate ethical obligations as a student and professional.
  • Articulate reasoning behind positive and negative behavioral choices.
  • Develop the ability to recognize and evaluate alternative courses of action.

Purpose

It is the goal of the Office of Student Rights & Responsibilities (OSRR) to uphold the values of Cal Poly through the student conduct code. Fundamental to the mission of OSRR is the promotion of ethics, integrity, and respect among all of our students.

Our purpose is to educate students on the values that they are expected to uphold as a member of the Cal Poly community and to make them aware that certain conduct can cause harm to themselves, the Cal Poly community, and the surrounding areas.

Learning Objectives

The goal of the student conduct process is to educate students about how their actions impact their person, the campus, and the greater campus community.   2. Understand how the Standards for Student Conduct contribute to the well-being of the university community .

  4. Articulate the student's reasoning behind positive and negative behavioral choices.
  5. Develop the student's ability to recognize and evaluate alternative courses of action.

Success with Integrity

Success with integrity is an indispensable ingredient of a successful college career and life. It creates the environment of respect vital for students wishing to achieve their ultimate educational and personal ambitions. To support this goal, Cal Poly students must learn and uphold the Standards for Student Conduct.

In addressing issues of student behavior, this office will treat students with respect and fairness. Students are entitled to be informed of reports alleging possible violations of the Standards for Student Conduct and to be provided with an opportunity to respond to such reports.
