Cal Poly is committed to providing a safe living and learning environment that fosters a sense of comfort and community during any emergency situation.

University Police Enforcement Authority

California State University Police officers have complete police authority to apprehend and arrest anyone involved in illegal acts on campus and areas adjacent to campus. University Police are sworn law enforcement officers and in compliance with state statues meet the peace officer standards and training requirements mandatory for all California law enforcement officers. In addition, California State University Police officers are responsible for enforcing Federal, State and local university codes, violations and traffic regulations. They perform investigative work, participate in and provide support and assistance to special crime prevention and enforcement programs and address agriculture/wildlife violations. University Police provide a multi-dimensional and directed patrol approach to the law enforcement services they provide ensures a consistent proactive approach in meeting the community's expectations of excellent public service.

University Police and the San Luis Obispo Police Department have a mutual aid agreement. Each department augments the other within their jurisdiction during mutual investigations, arrest and prosecutions. University Police personnel attend monthly meetings with local law enforcement agencies and other city agencies to exchange ideas and share information. 


Cal Poly takes a proactive approach to assisting students in crisis. The Student Affairs Care Team meets regularly to implement swift, effective, and accurate communication to help meet the needs of students in distress. The Care Team is chaired by Dr. Jean DeCosta, Dean of Students.
